Vertical Design Adapts Polymer Capacitors to Surface Mounting

For electronic equipment to respond to demands for improved functionality, capacitors must exhibit enhanced impedance and reinforced reliability in the high-frequency bandwidth. In 1998, Fujitsu Media Devices, Ltd. pioneered the development of functional polymer capacitors with lead terminals. The resulting products, the RE series, used aluminum foil for the anode. Subsequently, the series gained widespread attention for its super-low impedance and superb reliability. These characteristics dovetailed with the requirements for capacitors in CPU power supplies in personal computers. The improved features were especially important as CPU speeds began to accelerate, and as power supplies in consequence had to be able to handle increasingly strong currents. Since then, digital formats have become the mainstream in electronic game machines, computer peripherals, and products relating to LCDs. This digital trend has made it essential for capacitors to attain super-low impedance, to remove the high-frequency noise that tends to generate in such equipment. Other trends also have advanced, including those for dense surface mounting. To respond to this trend, Fujitsu Media Devices recently introduced the SE series of vertical chip capacitors, whose compatibility with lead-free soldering renders them environmentally benign. The SE series belongs to the FPCAP family of functional polymer capacitors.
