WHAT is over the next hill? An accurate answer to this question has eluded battlefield commanders down through history. Whether armed with yesterday's cannon, today's modern artillery piece or tomorrow's General Support Rocket System (GSRS), the artilleryman still has the capability to shoot farther than he can see. In response to this frustration, the artillerymen climbed trees, later used balloons, and during World Wars Ⅰ and Ⅱ, used observation aircraft. These methods provided a means of target acquisition but lacked the ability to accurately adjust the artillery in real time.
