In the MID-1700S, British landowners started rebuilding the peasant villages on their estates to make them look less, well, peasant-y. Soon there were new developments outside London that strove for the ideal of nature in the city, rus in urbe. Thus was born the garden suburb, lavishly chronicled by David Fishman, Jacob Tilove, and Robert A.M. Stern, FAIA, in their doorstop of a book, Paradise Planned: The Garden Suburb and the Modern City (The Monacelli Press, December 2013).
