MISSION: POSTMODERN -HEINRICH KLOTZ AND THE WUNDERKAMMER DAM

A look back- but certainly not in anger: the Deutsches Architekturmuseum(DAM) in Frankfurt am Main is celebrating its 30th birthday and recalls its founding director Heinrich Klotz and Postmodernism. The Deutsches Architekturmuseum (German Architecture Museum) has now finally grown up: founded in 1984, it hasn't been a teenager for quite some time and now it has finally left its twenties behind it, life is becoming serious. 30 years DAM, that means more than 330 exhibitions that have been presented here. Naturally, each of the five directors of the museum to date has had their own special focuses. The founding director Heinrich Klotz, who died far too young in 1999, established DAM (which to the present day has remained entirely municipal!) as the first architecture museum in the world and created a furore with the opening exhibition "Revision der Moderne". This show was nothing less than a re-evaluation of modernism, previously regarded by architects as something sacred, in the spirit of postmodernism, which many still saw as dubious or superficial.
