Vierschach fire station - A red machine

The new fire station in Vierschach, an impressive monolith built red exposed concrete, stands directly on the main road, above a small slope. Simple project Vierschach, which forms part of Innichen and is located in the Hochpustertal in South Tyrol, has a population of around 400, of whom 54 are members of the voluntary fire brigade. As the old building could no longer meet the spatial and technical needs, in 2011 this community set up a single-stage invited competition to build a new fire station. The competition was won by the Bruneck office of Pedevilla Architects against twelve competitors, some of them eminent practices. With a project that seems very simple, designed out of the function alone, "almost like a machine", as Armin Pedevilla says, putting it in a nutshell.
