Fallen tree: Oberholz mountain hut in South Tyrol by Peter Pichlei

The Dolomites range as backdrop: three monumental "peep boxes" make admiring the magnificent view from the new Oberholzhütte in South Tyrol's Eggental Valley into an exciting experience. The skiing centre Latemar is proud of its 48 kilometres of sunny pistes where snow is generally assured. The Dolomites form a magnificent backdrop. But for skiers and ramblers who got out of the Oberholz chair lift at a height of around 2,000 metres there was a lack of somewhere offering refreshments and a place to relax. Clearly, building such a facility here presented a challenge in terms of nature protection legislation and logistics. But as there had been a cabin here around 100 years ago the environmentalists eventually gave in, even through erecting the new hut involved building a new road especially for it.
