摘要

After studies in Johannesburg und London and travels in Europe and Africa she came to the USA in 1958. Compared to Europe and Africa, where she had perceived social flaws and growing unrest, she found the USA to be friendly and ordered. Perhaps because she started to get to know the country from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In the mid-1960s, when Afro-Americans had only recently been granted universal suffrage, she lived in California and taught at the departments for Environmental Design and Urban Design of the Universities of Berkeley and Los Angeles. She travelled and photographed in the southwest USA, also in Las Vegas, and investigated the unheroic, at times vociferous everyday architecture. She is still known to readers of the study "Learning from Las Vegas" under the name of her first husband, Robert Scott Brown. With her second husband Robert Venturi, one of the co-authors of the study, she worked together for decades at various universities and in their joint architecture office in Philadelphia. Today she concentrates her energy on writing.
