Archaeological Test Excavations on Two Sites Within the Brown-Scott Land Exchange

Test Excavations at the two sites involved in the land exchange revealed no evidence of subsurface materials. Analysis of the lithic remains on the surface at site 5 SM-53 indicates two and possibly 3 periods of site utilization over a period ranging from ca. 500 B.C. to A.D. 1880. Site 5-MN444 shows evidence of occupation between A.D. 700-1800. While hunting and associated activities seem to have been predominate at both locations, there is also limited evidence of plant processing at both sites. Only those portions of the sites which lay on lands under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Land Management were tested and mapped. Therefore the materials reported may not be totally representative of the types and activities which took place at the two locations.
