Berlin - Contexts of Architecture and Cityscape

Berlin, once the sleepy capital of the Kingdom of Prussia, suddenly developed into a metropolis around the turn of the 20th century. The fascination of Berlin stems from the way it continually changes to reflect the current age, even while preserving the memory of past glories and tragedies and the complexities of its positive and negative legacies. This issue, with new photos, is devoted to the "now" of the city and its architecture in their contemporary and historical contexts. Beginning around 1815, Berlin city planner Karl Friedrich Schinkel completed a number of national projects inspired by the ideals of neo-classicism. Ever since, they have served as models for the design of Berlin's urban spaces. At the same time, he designed projects with picturesque configurations, such as Schloss Charlottenhof in Potsdam, as well as architecture inspired by Romanticism. His work was an important point of reference for architects like Peter Behrens and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and remains so for architects working today in the 21 century.
