Few libraries can as thoroughly mirror national history, the ravages of war and the excesses of ideology as the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin - Preussischer Kulturbesitz (SBB). The year 2013 may mark, for the philosophically minded, the point where the heavy legacies of the library's past and the panorama of shattered values, beliefs and vast ruins have been upstaged by the quasi-Hegelian 'cunning of history' in the emergence of wonders most of us might have thought impossible. Such an event is commemorated in a publication which is uncommonly important for a range of reasons.
