In no other region or era has structural engineering developed with the intensity that was seen in Japan during the 20 years from the 1950s up to the advent of postmodernism. The astonishing economic growth of this period exerted a force like magma searching for an outlet, funding technological advances in every field. Architecture was no exception. Beginning with the Ehime Citizens Hall (1954), a series of reinforced concrete shell structures responded to these social trends.
