Just as Samsung layers silicon and other semiconducting materials to fabricate integrated circuits for use in electronic devices, NBBJ applied alayered approach to the architecture of the company's American headquarters in San Jose, California. But instead of producing ihin wafers, the architecture firm designed a building that sandwiches office floors between layers of green space. By alternating two floors of offices with one that is recessed and rimmed by covered terraces, the architects made sure that the 2,000 employees at the complex are never more than one story away from outdoor space, an amenity that can be used year-round in this part of northern California. Driving this strategy was the goal of connecting people and creating a sense of community. The architects also wanted to break down the mass of the building, so they pulled it apart - delaminating it into discrete pieces.
