In 2003 David Holm won the 2003 Byera Hadley Travelling Scholarship from the NSW Board of Architects and travelled through Italy - from Campania to Veneto - documenting and drawing architectural details and buildings from what he calls the "crucible of western architecture". In his introductory remarks, Holm declares drawing to be "the root of all sciences". What's engaging about this journal, however, is not just Holm's sketches, but the accompanying historical footnotes, along with his own observations on the contemporary context.
