Epa has completed its planned conditional registration of an active nanosilver pesticide ingredient, tightening its proposed safety standard and requiring a host of additional testing to account for how nanoscale materials may act in the environment - providing a model for how the agency could regulate other pesticides containing nanoscale ingredients. The agency Dec. 1 issued its final decision to register HeiQ AGS-20, a nanosilver pesticide ingredient marketed by HeiQ Materials for use by the textiles industry as a preservative. (Doc ID: 2383929) EPA issued the final decision even though it is still in the midst of trying to finalize a long-stalled Federal Insecticide, Fungicide & Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) policy for how it will collect data to on nanoscale ingredients of pesticides that it will consider as "new" and therefore subject to additional reporting requirements - even if the pesticide already contains a conventional form of the ingredient, such as silver.
