The father of architectural photography, Julius Shulman, dies in his Hollywood home, aged 98

Seventy-one years ago, Julius Shulman immortalised a building and a moment in time. Richard Neutra had built eight apartments on a hillside to the west of UCLA, in Westwood, Los Angeles. He hoped to generate income but potential tenants thought them too austere. Then MGM star Luise Rainer, who had won the Best Actress Oscar two years in a row, decided it would be a perfect hideaway. Shulman shot a glamorous celebrity kneeling, immersed in her books, and those images of domestic bliss, combined with the crisp white geometry of the exterior, conferred magic on this innovative project. Soon after, Charles and Ray Eames moved into the same apartment and stayed until they built their own house in 1949. I've had the good fortune to live there for the past 30 years and little has changed since those defining shots.
