I have argued that Kahn's most important and longest lasting legacy may well be his teaching, an opinion shared not only by many of his former students but also by outside observers. Always unconventional, even radical and subversive in style and content, his pedagogy grew out of his distinctive philosophy of education which reflected three principal themes: a Beaux-Arts emphasis on history, order, monumentality and the power of intuition; a neo-Platonic view of reality and the beginning of a project; and beliefs about the architect's role in society. His philosophy was instilled in his students through his unique seminar approach to teaching, which relied upon two ancient teaching techniques, the Socratic method and the Talmudic tradition, and which stressed the distinction between the 'what' and the 'how'.
