RIKUBETSU ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

This is the elementary school in Rikubetsu-cho in central Hokkaido which experiences minimum winter temperatures below minus 30, has the lowest average temperature in Japan and is called "the coldest town in Japan". To reduce the environmental load, the construction incorporates various features such as an open/closed hybrid construction using hard RC external insulation combined with open wooden construction for sunshine and heating systems using ground heat, and has created school buildings giving the impression of energy efficiency.
