MIKAWA ELEMENTARY & JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Parts of 3 existing elementary schools were modified and added to the existing junior high school in the same plot. The remaining facilities were moved into a new one-story building. A 1.2m difference in elevation led to the creation of a dedicated ground for the lower grade classrooms facing the south and a music room with tiered floors to the north. Implementation of a solar collecting system serves as practical teaching materials as well as to achieve a pleasant environment in both winter and summer. The water used in toilets comes from a rain water storage tank placed under the classrooms. Ayasugi, the locally grown cedar, was configured for frames and structural systems in the classrooms and gymnasium. The completion of the gymnasium with large scale, intricate framework could not be achieved without the exceptional skill of local carpenters with the knowledge from the past.
