A campus that helps to foster a sense of connectedness A school with a history spanning more than 100 years ago is planning a move to a different location where new buildings will be constructed. We are proposing a sustainable campus design where students may deepen their experience of thankfulness for being alive, which is the educational principle that the school adheres to. Rows of school buildings with a side corridor are arranged in a folding pattern. They three-dimensionally embrace various courtyards of different styles, creating various spaces where a student may find comfort. Bricks, tiles and metals used as parts of the exterior design reflect the regional character of Sakai-city. Perforated brick walls on the western side control sunshine and ventilation while roofed corridors, open at the sides, give passers-by a glimpse into school life, producing a sense of connectedness with the local community. In courtyards and other external spaces, native plants are to be established, contributing to the formation of an ecological network. We intend to build a campus that remains in the memory and senses of students who spend their youth, a period of heightened perceptivity, in these settings, and to make a contribution that will benefit people of all generations in society at large.
