Some English public schools (that is, those which charge fees) have superb buildings, and others educate their pupils in whatever comes to hand, but most, if not all, take architecture for granted. Unlike in Athens, the English climate makes buildings unfortunate necessities to provide shelter for teachers to drill their charges with Latin declensions and German irregular verbs - inconvenient and occasionally expensive lumps of brick, stone or whatever which fill the spaces between rugby or lacrosse pitches. Like many of its counterparts Bedford School, an ancient foundation in the Midlands town of the same name, has a motley collection of buildings whose coherence is not helped by the flat landscape and weakly defined edges of its campus which leak into anonymous suburbia. But as the eyes become accustomed the buildings seem to take on a character.
