Giambattista Nolli's 1748 map of the city of Rome was of particular importance for the time in the way it represented the entire city as an architectural plan, delineating the semipublic spaces of churches, theatre interiors, courtyards and stairways in-the same white notation as public streets, and thus demarcating a continuously accessible public space. It was this reading of the city, creating a map that reinforced a dichotomy through the black-and-white representation of public and private spaces, that was so unique.
