Beyond the dense urbanism of a city like Mumbai or the IT centres of Bangalore and Hyderabad lies the Ganges river corridor in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Though the immense territory appears outside the image of modern India, for the past 150 years this 'cow belt' has been situated at the very centre of a struggle to establish a productive countryside with its affiliated infrastructures of canals, barrages and roadways.
