The Plaza de la Encarnacion in the centre of Seville has a lively if ignoble history. It was first defined in the middle of the 19th century, when a central market hall was erected on its site within the walls of a demolished medieval monastery. This was prematurely destroyed in 1973 and replaced with a temporary building, a corrugated-iron barracks.
