The post-parametric computational design phase began long before now. When the Computational Design and Research (CDR) group at Aedas| R&D was set up in 2004, parametric modelling was just about to launch into its heyday, with the design community entranced by generating more efficient geometries of arbitrary shapes. Schools like the Architectural Association (AA) in London have since dedicated most of their innovation to 'parametricism'. The economy was booming and new iconic buildings were erected hastily. In such a climate, instead of another Advanced Geometry' or 'Modelling' group, Aedas decided to form a computational design group that would explore the application of artificial life and intelligence based on self-organisation, bottom-up processes and distributed representation to architectural design projects. Here, the organisation of space is understood mainly from an occupant's perspective, meaning the perception of spaces and the representation of their properties in relation to the user and his or her actions.
