ARE WE LOCAL OR GLOBAL?

In June 1997, while presenting our second stage submission for Federation Square, one of the members of the jury, Peter Clemenger, remarked on our analysis of the urban morphology of Melbourne and the spatial and organisational attributes that we felt were relevant to our project. He queried how we could know so much about Melbourne if we hadn't lived there for years. It seemed self-evident to us, that it was exactly our lack of "being part" of Melbourne that was a valuable prerequisite to being attuned to the invisible structures and networks that animated this unique urbanism. This attuning was also the consequence of four or five years work looking at and developing new prototypes of urban order. It was our luck that Melbourne, of all sites, should possess such a sympathetic background upon which to intervene.
