Ten years ago architects' websites were fairly rare and fairly similar. The architect's first website was a small one built by the office manager's son who was on school holidays. The boss, suspicious that the web was just another fad, soon to be buried next to the Tamagochi, paid him the same as the printing costs of a few A4 folios. The site was uploaded and forgotten, with virtual cobwebs growing in the news page. A menu on the left opened a bunch of project photos on the right. Now architects are more proficient with and reliant on the internet, and their expectations of it have increased too. So why is it that in light of the increased sophistication of the www, architects'websites have advanced little in the last decade? They may look a lot slicker, but what they do and what they represent remains pretty much unchanged.
