New Forms of Practice

Openhaus, the emerging practice of Melbourne architects Christine Phillips and Tania Davidge, is the epitome of the non-conventional enterprise. "We're non-conventional, non-traditional, alternative...but don't say just plain odd!", quips Tania in my interview with her. Openhaus is unique in that it is an architecture practice without buildings - so far - and yet it remains focused on all aspects of the process and method of architecture. Like many fledgling practices, Openhaus was created out of equal parts opportunity and necessity. The imminent arrival of a baby gave Tania reason to seek out opportunities that had a shorter 'shelf-life'than building projects, as she put it; from this the exhibitions concept was born.
