Calculating Scattering Spectra using Time-domain Modeling of Time-modulated Systems

Obtaining agreement between theoretical predictionsthat assume single-frequency excitation and finite-differencetime-domain (FDTD) simulations that employ broadband excitationin the presence of time-varying materials is challenging dueto frequency mixing. A simple solution is proposed to reduceartifacts in FDTD-calculated spectra from the frequency mixinginduced by harmonic refractive index modulation applicable toscenarios in which second order and higher harmonics are negligible.Advantages of the proposed method are its simplicity andapplicability to arbitrary problems including resonant structures.
