Analytical pyrolysis - gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) quantification methods for three paper additives from totally different chemical classes are presented, a styrene acrylate copoly-merisate latex, a urea formaldehyde resin, and a polyvinyl acetate. Single mass fragments from typical pyrolysis products of the additives are used as qualifier ions for identification and quantification. An important feature of the measurements is the application of the single ion mode of the mass selective detector. It enhances the sensitivity and diminishes the interference with pyrolysis products deriving from the matrix. Due to different retention times of the chosen pyrolysis products, a concomitant quantification of several additives in a paper sample is possible in a single pyrolysis run. The potential of the Py-GC/MS technique is shown in the concomitant quantification of three specific paper additives from the chemical classes mentioned above. The three investigated products can be regarded as examples, and it is assumed that, after minor adaptations, the presented methods will also be suited for other products from these chemical classes.
