The use of ozone and oxygen as an intermediate chemical treatment during refining, aimed at reducing the energy consumption in the TMP process while maintaining or improving pulp and paper properties, was studied. The pH conditions for ozone treatment were adjusted in the range of 4.5 to 5.5, according to our previous study. The most significant energy saving could be realised with 2% ozone applied with 1.35% sodium hydroxide charge. Both oxidative agents were found to have a slight positive effect on increasing mean fibre length of secondary pulp. No decrease in fibre coarseness was observed when 5% oxygen was applied on primary pulp, while ozone treatment led to a decrease of fibre coarseness. Some increase of tensile strength was obtained along with an increase in tear strength.
