Henry Tan, CEO and president of LuenThai International Group Ltd., recently gave an update on China at the American and Apparel Footwear Association's (AAFA) Annual Summit. He presented the requisite details of how China's economy is growing by leaps and bounds; how wages are increasing (in 2010 the average minimum wage was up 22.8 percent and it jumped another 20 percent last month); how larger factories are taking control from smaller factories due to tightened credit; and how while China offers huge retail potential for apparel, its retail environment is still a very tough nut to crack and a long-shot for any but the most mammoth and successful of retailers. The most interesting thing Tan said? When asked if he had to choose where he would go in order to build an apparel supply chain from scratch, he said Indonesia. "There's not as much competition for workers ... and Chinese companies don't like to go there."
