During the 1999 APICS Conference in New Orleans last October, several attendees expressed a common concern about how managers make the make-or-buy decision. At the heart of this decision is whether a specific component, product, or service should be generated internally or obtained from an outside supplier. In many instances, managers base this decision almost totally on economic grounds—often with disastrous results for the firm.
