Reader R.W. called in reference to developing MRP bills of material (BOM) in a remanufacturing environment. He referenced the use of low-level codes in developing the bills. We decided to dig a little deeper to define low-level codes. A series of subassemblies within a final assembly often will use common parts throughout the product. Or several products may be employed throughout, especially electronic parts, hardware, and consumable materials. Without the use of low-level coding, every time that part appears in a planning scenario—within a product or across several products—the system will evaluate the need to reorder after comparing the demand to the on-hand balance and open orders. An independent assessment to determine availability would be made, without taking into consideration the other parts in the process vying for the same inventory.
