The growing proportion of research and development funding in the undersea warfare market shows the extent to which this market is undergoing a paradigm shift in terms of the technologies exploited within its various subsectors. It is already apparent that there will be little resemblance between the market as it exists today and that which will be the norm in 10 years' time. Many of the operations now undertaken by manned platforms will have been assigned to unmanned vehicles. Submarines and surface ships that are primarily assigned to undersea warfare roles will cease to be direct participants but will instead be mobile bases and mother ships for those unmanned vehicles.
