ENVIRONMENTAL KNOWLEDGE: INDIGENOUS AND EXOGENOUS

East-West Environmental Linkages is a research network of scholars from Europe, north America and Asia set up to focus on how environmental issues connect different groups, localities and levels of organisation in a global context. The theme of its most recent workshop - funded by the European Science Foundation - was Indigenous Environmental Knowledge and its Transformations, held at the University of Kent at Canterbury, from 8-10 May. 18 participants gathered to discuss a key issue within environmentalist, developmental and anthropological discourse; indigenous knowledge of resource management and how it is perceived, represented, and utilized by various agents, each with their own political, economic, cultural and scholarly agendas.
