Within the wireless industry, a dominance transition is gradually taking place from voice-centric to multiservice datacen-tric networks. This may not be so gradual in the future. The profitability of data networks depends on effective delivery of both circuit- and packet-switched data. In future networks, continuous monitoring using NPIs will allow carriers, service providers, and other stakeholders to address and troubleshoot quality issues on a proactive basis, reduce the amount of user/subscriber churn experienced, and increase the amount of billable time. Service providers will be able to differentiate their services in the marketplace based on more reliable, guarantee-supported QoS criteria, establish QoS agreements for IP-VPNs, and create a clear path for deployment of new and innovative IP-based services. Customer satisfaction may be further enhanced by providing visibility into managed service performance information through the use of Web portals, thereby extending benefit of intelligence brought about by NPIs directly to customers. Access to such data may be provided as part of the SLA with the service provider or by direct contract with the portals themselves. The NPIs deployment will play a significant role in achieving the kind of transparency that makes the evolution of a genuine ABC&S environment more likely.
