Letter to the editor: performance of abrasive blasting respirators

Dr.Hammad states that his extremely high pro- tection factors support a WPF of 1,000. However, the workplace and conditions he presents are not rep- resentative of many industrial sandblast operations where conditions could be more severe and protection afforded by the hood could be much less than reported here. The results presented here are only applicable to sandblast operations where: 1)flow tests are con- ducted to assure adequate flow to the equipment; 2) Bullard representatives instruct, fit, maintain and Clean the equipment; 3)small bore nozzles are utilized And blasters stand in ventilated booths with restricted Opportunity for blow back; and 4)blasters, while wear- Ing abrasive blasting hoods, perform activities other Than blasting for two-thirds of their work day.
