Veterinary Surveillance of Rift Valley Fever

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a zoonosis caused by a bunya virus inflicting great economic losses from reduced productivity, abortions in pregnant animals and high mortality in animals and humans. RVF is defined as one of the haemorrhagic fever viruses in the emerging diseases group. It was first isolated in 1930 in the Rift Valley of Kenya from sheep and is endemic in sub Saharan Africa.
