Four types of water-soluble quantum dots (QDs) graftednwith different organic coating layers were fabricated, andntheir sensitivities for hypochlorite/hypochlorous acidn(HClO) were examined. It was found that QDs with HClOnreactive (methylamino and sulphide groups) coating layersnexhibited a protective effect on HClO quenching of QDnfluorescence, whereas QDs with hydrocarbon and carboxylatencoating layers showed least protection to QDnfluorescence quenching by HClO and, thus, has thenhighest sensitivity for the detection of HClO. The QDs withncarboxylate coating layers (QDs-poly-CO2n-) was successfullynapplied to the quantification of HClO in tap water.nThe excellent selectivity of the QDs-poly-CO2n- towardnhypochlorite against other reactive oxygen speciesnallowed us to monitor myeloperoxidase activity. Finally,nthe QDs-poly-CO2n- was also used for the detection ofnhypochlorite in HL60 cells by fluorescent imaging.nHence, QD-poly-CO2n- exhibits great promise as anselective and sensitive HClO probe in chemical andnbiological systems.
