If you attended JSM recently, you may remember walking past a booth labeled "Committee on Career Development." Perhaps you wondered why such a Committee existed or what it could do to help you start or advance your statistical career. We're sometimes confused with the JSM Placement Service, but the ASA Committee on Career Development (CCD) is actually a group of ASA volunteers who are committed to helping ASA members plan their career paths and progress steadily toward their long-term career goals. We don't want any statistician to retire from the field thinking, "My career was a sequence of events that happened to me." A career in statistics is much more interesting and rewarding when we take charge, set long-term goals, and work to achieve them. Of course, many statisticians find that their career goals change as they discover new areas of statistics and new applications for our discipline. We all need to step back periodically to look at where we've been, reevaluate the goals we've set, and think creatively about our options for the future. The CCD offers information to help statisticians with this process.
