Nathan Bedford Forrest was born July 13, 1821, and was named Nathan for his grandfather, and Bedford for the Tennessee county of his birth. His twin sister, Fanny, died from typhoid at age 5; two younger sisters and two younger brothers also died. Nathan contracted the disease as well, but survived. His daughter Fanny, named in memory of his twin, also died in childhood-from dysentery at age 6.
