Washington and Lee removes Rebel flags from chapel

Gen. Robert E. Lee served as president of what became Washington and Lee University after the war, and in 1867 he oversaw construction of the chapel that would be his final resting place. But the flag he fought for is no longer welcome at the Lexington, Va., school, after a group of African-American law students protested that its presence was unwelcoming to minorities. President Kenneth E Ruscio told students and faculty in July that the school would remove decorative Confederate flags from Lee Chapel, although historic Rebel flags will be displayed in the chapel museum.
