Somewhere amidst the myths associated with chlorine dioxide generation and the skepticism about its potential health effects lies a balanced view of its value as an alternative disinfectant for drinking water. Use of chlorine dioxide in public drinking water supplies has been questioned since it was introduced in 1944 to control phenol-related compounds in the Niagara River. Despite the advantages of chlorine dioxide as an adjunct to free or combined chlorine, water suppliers, consultants, and academic and regulatory professionals continue to express concern about its potential health effects.
