Harris Interactive~R poll finds that American workers were more likely to use "sick time" for personal or family needs rather than actual illness, pointing out the need for work-life and absence-control programs that recognize changing workforce demographics and values. Conducted for CCH Inc., a firm specializing in human resources and employment information, the survey found that only a third of unscheduled absences were for physical illness. The rate of unscheduled absenteeism because of personal needs doubled in 2002, from 11% in 2001 to 21% in 2002. Absences as a result of family issues in 2002 were up 3% over 2001, to 24%.
