Profiling Groundwater Wells―an Alternative to Treatment

High-capacity water wells have historically been constructed to maximize yield from an aquifer. Water quality is often thought to be an uncontrollable factor. Recent experience, however, tells us that well profiling can be used to control the quality of water that enters a well. The physical and chemical information obtained from profiling a well can be used to identify undesirable zones of chemistry that contain such elements as arsenic, iron, or nitrates. The data from a well's profile are used to determine design modifications that can eliminate the undesirable zone(s) of chemistry that can negatively affect raw water quality. The engineering options for modifying a well include inflatable packers, cement grouting, liners, and other measures.
