Waste water treatment in Norway: An overview

In Norway, as the discharge of effluent wastewater from municipal and private sewers and from agricultural and industrial activities rose conspicuously during the 1960s, the eutrophication of water bodies and the symptomatic algal blooms, fish mortality, soiled beaches, and malodorous water attracted attention. The heightened focus merited by environmental concerns and water pollution locally, nationally, and globally provided the much-needed impetus to the advancement of wastewater treatment and the increase in the number of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in this country from the 1970s onward.
