The finalized Ground Water Rule (GWR) specifies that UV cannot be used as a stand-alone technology to achieve 4-log inactivation of viruses because the UV doses required by USEPA rules currently cannot be validated at full scale with existing biological surrogates (USEPA, 2006b). However, the GWR also states that each state can accept the use of UV disinfection for virus inactivation if it is demonstrated through a field-scale validation challenge test.
