摘要

Rex, an eight-year-old German Shepherd who recently retired as a U.S. Air Force service dog, has a new purpose since leaving the military. Rex now accompanies the AMVETS Post 111 Color Guard from Pachogue, N.Y. onto the parade field for ceremonies and other special events around the community. AMVETS member Gilbert Boyer, who served as a dog handler in Vietnam, adopted Rex from Lackland Air Force Base in Texas and immediately brought Rex into the AMVETS family. When military working dogs retire from service to the Department of Defense, they may only be adopted by current or prior service military dog handlers.
