Understanding Business Statistics

Understanding Business Statistics (UBS) is a new introductory textbook geared toward undergraduate students. The presentation style of the material is informal, occasionally witty, and for the most part, the book does a good job exposing students to the fundamentals of statistics and probability. But aside from its price, UBS does not set itself apart from its current competitors. In Chapterrn1, the author points out that he has made an effort to separate "key and fundamental issues" from "issues of only secondary or supporting significance." The cost here was that there were a number of topics receiving little or no attention (e.g. Type II error and power) that I felt should be standard (even if not covered in lecture) in any introductory book. The book also needs more illuminating examples to illustrate how statistics are used in practice. Instructors looking for a thought-provoking textbook that challenges students' statistical thinking and skills may be somewhat disappointed.
