Lubbock, Tx.-With operators busily pursuing deeper, more geologically complex and more technically challenging drilling targets, advancements are spinning out of the drilling fluid systems sector at a dizzying pace. The story in drilling muds is all about new technologies, environmental syntheses and the ability to maintain chemical stabilities in environments that range from 38 degrees at the mud line to more than 500 degrees three miles down the hole. Today's fluids industry has evolved from commodity status to engineered solutions as the sector transforms itself into a service-oriented technology business. That has participants as excited as anytime in the past decade over the evolving properties of mud, whether oil-based (OBM), synthetic-based (SBM) or high-performance water-based (HPWBM) muds.
